Most denominations are subject to regulations and milk is no exception, so do you know the rules governing the use of the word 🥛 “MILK”?
Today, we present to you the names regulated according to the fat content of powdered milk.
A European Union directive sets the rules, they are the same in all member countries for skimmed milk and high fat milk. However, for semi-skimmed milk, the fat content varies. Here is a summary infographic.
🔵 “Semi-skimmed milk powder”, “Halfvolle melkpoeder”, “Leite em pó meio gordo”, “leche en polvo semidesnatada” 👉 in France, it's at least 14% fat, while in Portugal, it's 13% and in Spain, only 10%. In other EU countries, there is no such thing as semi-skimmed milk. Between 1.5% and 26% fat, this is partly skimmed milk, the range is wide and the organoleptic differences are therefore large.
🟢 Skimmed milk powder 👉 maximum 1.5% fat
🔴 High fat milk powder 👉 at least 26 % and less than 42 % fat
